Tongue Master

Body by James, part v

TongueMaster

Scripture Reading: James 3:1-12

Memory Verse: With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. James 3:9,10 NIV

Memory Verse: WTTWPOLAF, AWIWCM, WHBMIGL. OOTSMCPAC. MB, TSNB. James 3:9,10 NIV

Listen to GOD speak

Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. James 3:1 NIV

Monitor your SELF-Talk…

But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. Romans 8:6b NLT

Be careful with your PEOPLE-talk

When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. James 3:3-4 NIV

I. SPEAK LIFE

We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. James 3:2 NIV

Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. James 3:5-6 NIV

II. BE KIND

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. James 3:7,8 NIV

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. James 3:9-12 NIV

No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:43-45

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry…James 1:19 NIV

III. LISTEN MUCH

1. Ignoring

2. Pretending

3. Selective

4. Attentive

5. Empathetic Listening

Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent. Proverbs 17:28 NLT

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. Proverb 10:19 NLT

And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. Colossians 3:17 NLT
