WHAT KINDS OF LIFE GROUPS ARE THERE?

There is a wide variety of Life Groups at OCC and each one is unique. Groups are meeting throughout the area in homes, at the church, really anywhere and everywhere. Most groups meet in the evening, but some meet in the morning or afternoon. We have groups for men, women, singles, couples, intergenerational, in English, and in Mandarin. We even have groups for sailing enthusiasts and motorcycle enthusiasts!

HOW LONG DO LIFE GROUPS LAST?

Most groups meet weekly for 90 minutes to two hours. Some meet bi-weekly. Connect groups (special introductory curriculum focusing on relationship building) meet for 6-9 weeks, then decide whether to continue. Some long term groups have been meeting for more than 10 years!

WHAT HAPPENS IN A LIFE GROUP?

Groups typically begin with an ice-breaker question...something to get everyone talking and sharing a bit about themselves. The “meat” of the meeting is a Bible or topical study, usually lasting 40-60 minutes. Studies may include a video segment, questions and discussion. Individuals sharing praises, and prayer requests. People pray as led. Groups usually end with a social time with some great food!

WHAT ABOUT CHILDREN?

Many Live Groups groups are perfect for families with children. Groups meeting at Overlake typically have access to Children's Ministry programs.

WHAT IF THE LIFE GROUP I'VE JOINED DOES NOT FIT WHO I AM?

You are encouraged to try out different groups, keeping in mind that God may have chosen a particular group for you for a reason. There is no obligation to stay in a group, but we suggest you give your group a few weeks to see if it will work.

IS THERE A COST TO BE IN A LIFE GROUP?

Members typically purchase their own study materials. The cost is minimal.

WHAT IS THE EMPTY CHAIR?

This is the chair that the group prays over at every meeting signifying that a new person is welcome in their group. By faithfully praying over the empty chair, the group keeps the mission and the vision God has given alive.

WHO IS THE LIFE GROUP LEADER?

This is a person who takes responsibility to form a group. The role of the leader is to facilitate an environment in which group members can care for and minister to one another as well as learn from each other. The leader oversees the on the job training of the apprentice in the group. The leader is connected to Life Group ministry through the coordinator.

WHAT IS A LIFE GROUP APPRENTICE?

We want to ensure that as more people respond to the call to be connected to Life Groups, we have people gifted and trained to lead new groups. The role of the apprentice is to learn from the group leader, and to share the leadership role. At the time that God has designated, the apprentice will be called on to start a group of his or her own.

WHAT ARE LIFE GROUP COORDINATORS?

There are two levels of Coordinators. The first is Area Coordinator. These people are the relational, informational, motivational, pastoral link between 5 small groups in their care and the divistion leader.

The second is Division Leader. The Division Leaders are OCC staff or appointed by OCC staff who oversee, minister to, and support the area coordinators.
