Two Thoughts from Pastor Mike

Dear Overlake Family,

Love ActuallyFirst Thought: Last Sunday, we saw hundreds of new families come to OCC to check out the Love Actually Relationships Series! I'm so proud of all of you who have been living the Bringvitational Lifestyle!! Last week we talked about Friendships, and I want to thank you for being a good friend and for bringing friends so that they might know Jesus!

This coming Sunday, we're going to take a look at God's Best in DATING…whether you're single and trying to navigate the dating scene, or whether you've been married for decades, God has a GREAT plan for DATING…
so feel free to bring a friend to this week's message: 50 First Dates.

Also: You'd help me out a ton if you could share a story with me…feel free to answer any of the following (don't include names, please):

  1. What was the most creative date that you've ever been on?
  2. What was your most embarrassing moment on a date?
  3. What was the cheapest date you've been on?
  4. How do you keep dating creatively when you've been married for years?

I'd love to share your story this weekend (and I won't include names)! E-mail Sara at sarab@occ.org and let me know any personal anecdotes…look forward to seeing you Sunday!

Second Thought: In my Sunday, January 6 "Looking Ahead - 2008" message, I explained that for the unity of the church, we need a crystal clear understanding of OCC's vision to Love God, Love People and Serve the World. Since Jesus is at the center of this thing and because I believe that our faith is best shown in the way we live our lives, our prayer (and our goal) is that each member of Overlake would LIVE their life fulfilling the vision.

If you missed the Sunday, January 6 message, please listen to it online or pick up a CD from OCC's LifeWay store. That message covers the first part of our membership curriculum. Then, JOIN US on January 23 at 7 pm to hear the second part where we'll journey together to accomplish God's plan. I'd love to have everyone, from recent attendee to long-time member, be there.

Some have asked: 'Will I be dropped as an Overlake member if I'm unable to attend next Wednesday's Family Chat at the church?" And the answer: My heart IS to have EVERYONE who considers Overlake their church home attend the 7 pm "Chat" on January 23 in the Main Auditorium. It will be an inspirational, theologically invigorating, 90 minute evening* where we will lay out in more detail how Overlake's vision will be advanced through our 2008 ministry and financial goals. But friends, no one's membership is being questioned or deleted for not attending on January 23rd. I love you, and I love being on this journey with you, together, charging hard after Jesus; this is simply a needed step in uniting our hearts for HIM!! If you have any questions please e-mail us and let us know.

Grace and Peace,

Mike Howerton
OCC Lead Pastor

AN OCC BYLAWS REVISION* is needed to reflect the previously announced shift in our fiscal year, which is currently July through June. This change will help align the calendar year and the fiscal year, making budgeting and record keeping easier. We will be asking OCC members to approve the revision on Sunday, January 27. If you have questions, please contact Seth Brickman, CFO.

*The revision would replace this text: "Our fiscal year will be July 1 – June 30," with, "Our fiscal year will be January 1 – December 31."

Let's ConnectLET'S CONNECT UPDATE
If you missed our Let's Connect event on Thursday, January 10, you'll have ANOTHER chance coming up on May 8. Here's what happened LAST week:

  • 171 people attended the event
  • 34 of those were leaders/elders
  • Four people stepped up as potential new leaders for Women's, Couple's, and Single's groups
  • To date more than 70 people are known to have connected to a group or group about to form

LET'S CONNECT is an informal and unique environment that invites those 'not yet connected' right into a real living room setting where they can meet life group leaders. In fact, there was an entire Life Group that held their Thursday night meeting at the LET'S CONNECT event-using the time to meet and invite others to join them. Our next connecting event is scheduled for Thursday, May 8.
