What exactly is a parish?
The word parish first appeared in English in the 13th century, coming from the Greek words: paroikia, "sojourning," and paroikos, meaning "dwelling beside.” These roots are important. The Bible reminds us that WE are the sojourners, dwelling beside others…whom God has purposefully placed within our parish.
In the English (and Catholic) traditions, a parish meant a small geographical district typically having its own priest or pastor…that’s you. Parish refers not only to the territorial unit, but to all the people living within its borders. So congratulations! This means that everyBODY who lives in your city is in your parish!
The primary question we are going to be answering over these next two years is, “How can I care for my parish?” the church building at OCC is where our parishes come together!
